The United States player says he first tested positive in November and tournament organisers argue he is therefore not infectious

United States tennis player Tennys Sandgren is bound for Melbourne after Tennis Australia reportedly intervened so he could board a charter flight despite testing positive for coronavirus.

In a series of tweets on Thursday, Australian time, Sandgren initially suggested he would not be able to board the flight for the Australian Open, writing “Covid positive over thanksgiving” and “Covid positive on Monday”.

A lot couch virologists out there. My two tests were less than 8 weeks a part. I was sick in November, totally healthy now. There’s not a single documented case where I would be contagious at this point. Totally recovered!

Tennys Stangren’s positive result was reviewed by health experts and determined to be viral shedding from a previous infection, so was given the all clear to fly. No one who is COVID positive for the first time - or could still be infectious - will be allowed in for the Aus Open

Australian Open tennis feels hard to justify amid this crisis. A 1,270-strong entourage on charter flights to Melbourne, and yet 40,000 of country's own citizens still stranded abroad due to ultra-draconian arrival caps. That is a very warped order of priorities.
